SUMMARY:Building a Better Budget: Managing Resources in Your Library
DESCRIPTION:Register for Zoom \n\n\n\nTRLN is offering a 2 part series about creating budgets and resource planning within libraries. Ann Wolfe\, Duke University’s Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services and Joe White\, NC State Libraries’ Director of Finance and Business will lead both sessions. Reach out to kelly@trln.org with any questions. \n\n\n\nOverview Session September 29 10:30am – 12pm\n\n\n\nThe first session will provide an overview of what a budget is\, different types of funds that could make up a budget\, how to ensure the budget is aligned with strategic goals\, and decision-making under challenging conditions. The content for this session will be broadly applicable for staff seeking to understand and create budgets or to staff who are interested in this topic. There is not a cap on attendees for this overview session. The last 20 minutes of this session will explain the expectations for the second session and offer information on how to participate. \n\n\n\nRegister for the first session at https://duke.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMqcOuurj0rHtCzVyNFyR4ORdZQ1AqtY6rs. \n\n\n\nApplication Session October 27 10:30am – 12pm\n\n\n\nFor a subset of participants from the first session\, the second part will focus on applying the knowledge learned in the previous session. Participants will be expected to use either a real scenario from their work or a project they are interested in to create a budget and offer a brief 5-minute or less presentation. We encourage presentations to be a work in progress so Ann Wolfe and Joe White can offer their feedback and participants will leave with a working draft of a project budget.

SUMMARY:Employee Orientation
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend a virtual Employee Orientation! This event will be held via Zoom. Register for the Zoom meeting to receive the meeting link and additional information. \n\n\n\nWhile this orientation is designed for “new” employees\, we welcome participation by anyone who works in a TRLN library and who might want a refresher. It is a fun and informal introduction to the people\, priorities\, and activities of the consortium. Attendees will learn about the services that TRLN provides and learn about ways to get involved in numerous areas of collaboration. This is an excellent opportunity to build connections with a community beyond your home library and institution. We plan to offer an additional orientation session in the 2021–2022 year for any who are unable to attend the October session.

SUMMARY:Building a Better Budget: Managing Resources in Your Library
DESCRIPTION:TRLN is offering a 2 part series about creating budgets and resource planning within libraries. The content for this session was broadly applicable for staff seeking to understand and create budgets or to staff who are interested in this topic. \n\n\n\nAttending the first session is a requirement of participating in the second session. Reach out to kelly@trln.org with any questions. \n\n\n\nApplication Session October 27 10:30am – 12pm\n\n\n\nFor a subset of participants from the first session\, the second part will focus on applying the knowledge learned in the previous session. We encourage presentations to be a work in progress so Ann Wolfe and Joe White can offer their feedback and participants will leave with a working draft of a project budget. \n\n\n\nIntroduction\n\n\n\nYour library needs new ideas as it continues to grapple with the impact of COVID-19 and the opportunities that the crisis presents. You are encouraged to create and submit requests for funding new projects\, creative experimentations\, and new or different approaches to services\, collections\, use of technology\, or other challenges. \n\n\n\nThe Task\n\n\n\nDevelop an idea for a new project and present the idea to gain funding approval. Create a budget for this idea and be prepared to effectively present the idea to the larger group. \n\n\n\nPrepare a 5-minute or less presentation (think “sales pitch”) of your idea that details your project\, why it should be pursued\, and its resource needs. Apply what was learned during the first Building a Better Budget training session to bolster your presentation. \n\n\n\nHelpful touch points may include: \n\n\n\nWhat significant need will this project meet? How does it strategically align with the mission and goals of your organization? What resources are needed for the idea to be successful?

SUMMARY:Solr Workshop
DESCRIPTION:TRLN’s Genia Kazymova is hosting a Solr workshop that seeks to help library staff query our shared Solr index to export data for more nuanced analysis. Solr is the non-relational database that hosts the shared index that populates the institutional library catalogs. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed for anyone who is interested in querying the Solr index to learn about TRLN collections. No prior knowledge of Solr is required. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of the library catalog\, its content\, and search fields.  \n\n\n\nThe same workshop will be offered twice: Tuesday\, March 15 at 2:00\, and Friday\, March 18\, at 10:30. \n\n\n\nRegister (for either date) at this link. \n\n\n\nYou will receive confirmation of registration and a Zoom link for the workshop you select. Registration will be capped at 25 participants per session. \n\n\n\nTo help design the workshop to meet participant needs\, Genia welcomes input from registrants on their learning goals. Generally\, the workshop will address these topics: \n\n\n\nAccessing the Solr index for querying (via Solr admin or URL)https://solr.apache.org/guide/6_6/query-screen.html#query-screen MARC -> Argot -> SolrTRLN ingest applicationIntroduction to Solr parametersHow to find the IDs of all records in the indexFor example\, I want to find all IDs (records) for NCCU and save them locallySearch by OCLC numberSearch by languageFor example\, I want to find the number of documents in Arabic shared across TRLNSearch by notesFor example\, I want to find all the Solr documents that have the note “From the private library of Naum Korzhavin.”Facets in Solr (https://solr.apache.org/guide/6_6/faceting.html) \n\n\n\nNote: this workshop will overlap heavily with the Solr workshop that Genia offered in October 2021 for technical services staff. Participants from the October workshop are welcomed to register\, but keep in mind that most of the content will be familiar.
