SUMMARY:Remote Rap Sessions - Outlaws of the Airwaves: The Rise of Pirate Radio Station WBAD
DESCRIPTION:Register for the Zoom discussion. \n\n\n\nThe selection for the sixth session of TRLN’s Remote Rap Sessions will be about the Lost Notes podcast episode Outlaws of the Airwaves: The Rise of Pirate Radio Station WBAD (26 minutes). Registration helps with our planning and is much appreciated. You can register before and during the discussion and will receive the meeting link as soon as you register. \n\n\n\nPirate radio blew up in the 1990s as the technology became more affordable\, and easy internet access wasn’t quite yet a thing. Underground\, unregulated radio stations became some of the best places to hear local music. WBAD in New York was among the most beloved. They played unsanitized hip-hop\, most of which wasn’t being touched by mainstream hip-hop radio. And no one knew that all this was being delivered to them by their friendly neighborhood UPS driver. Once the nightly news came calling though\, everything changed. https://www.kcrw.com/culture/shows/lost-notes/outlaws-of-the-airwaves-the-rise-of-pirate-radio-station-wbad\n\n\n\nJoining us as co-facilitators of this session will be Michael Shoffner\, adjunct faculty member of UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science and senior research software architect in the Data Sciences Group at Renaissance Computing Institute. Shoffner led the world’s first online radio station simulcast through what is now ibiblio.org and WXYC; Kyesha Jennings\, Hip Hop Scholar\, Lecturer\, and Faculty Mentor\, NC State University; DeeJay Samps\, CEO\, A&R\, and manager of Street Flava Entertainment and host of the Street Flava Mixshow on WXDU; and Aaron Smithers\, Special Collections Research and Instructional Services Librarian\, UNC Chapel Hill. \n\n\n\nSuggested Discussion Questions: \n\n\n\nWhat’s one thing you found interesting about the episode? What are some ways we can encourage people to think about the importance of archiving outside of the academy/academia? In other words\, how can we make personal archiving valuable to people?Do you have any examples of archival work in your own personal life?“Anchored in the birthplace of the culture\, the Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx celebrates and preserves the history of local and global Hip Hop to inspire\, empower\, and promote understanding.” What kinds of understanding would be lost or overlooked without such a museum? How do or could our libraries/consortium work to “inspire\, empower\, and promote understanding”?\n\n\n\nShared Resources: \n\n\n\nFCC enforcement action (against DJ Ghetto) for operating a pirate station in the Bronx\, July 2019.https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-358822A1.pdfJennings\, Kyesha. “DeeJay Samps’ ‘Street Flava Mixshow’ Is a Hip-Hop Rite of Passage.” Indy Week. SUMMARY:Library Carpentry Workshops
DESCRIPTION:TRLN is offering Library Carpentry workshops to approximately 25 people who work in TRLN member libraries. This opportunity is being funded by the Network of the National Library of Medicine\, Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Office (NNLM/SEA)\, which invited applications in July from libraries and consortia interested in hosting a workshop. Nandita Mani\, UNC-Chapel Hill Associate University Librarian for Health Sciences and Director of the Health Sciences Library\, and Megan von Isenburg\, Associate Dean for Library Services & Archives at the Duke School of Medicine\, suggested that TRLN apply. \n\n\n\nThe workshops\, offered via Zoom\, include Introduction to Working with Data\, the Unix Shell\, OpenRefine\, and Introduction to Git. The workshop series will last four days from 10:00am to 3:00pm (one day per topic) and will be led by experienced Library Carpentry instructors and supported by 2–3 helpers\, staff of TRLN libraries who are familiar with the content. Participants and helpers were identified by the TRLN Advisory Council.

SUMMARY:Remote Rap Sessions - Lena Richard: America’s Unknown Celebrity Chef

SUMMARY:Employee Orientation
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend a virtual Employee Orientation! This event will be held via Zoom. Register for the Zoom meeting to receive the meeting link. \n\n\n\nWhile this orientation is designed for “new” employees\, we welcome participation by anyone who works in a TRLN library and who might want a refresher. It is a fun and informal introduction to the people\, priorities\, and activities of the consortium. Attendees will learn about the services that TRLN provides and learn about ways to get involved in numerous areas of collaboration. This is an excellent opportunity to build connections with a community beyond your home library and institution.More information and an agenda coming soon. We plan to offer one additional orientation session in 2021 for any who are unable to attend the January session.

SUMMARY:Stop LAPD Spying Coalition Archive: Understanding and Resisting
DESCRIPTION:Registration & About this Event\n\n\n\nRegister for the Zoom discussion. \n\n\n\nDillon Sung and Hamid Khan will speak about a project to create a digital archive for the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition. Dillon will return in June to host a workshop for TRLN on generating folksonomies related to this archive. Attending this presentation is highly encouraged as a prerequisite to the workshop. \n\n\n\nConceptualized and developed with community members\, this multi-phase project will collect and make accessible public records obtained from governmental agencies\, materials about the Coalition\, and additional information about the project and archive. The archive will support community members\, organizers\, artists\, journalists\, and researchers doing work against state surveillance\, by providing access to information as well as models and archive tools for organizers who want to develop their own community-based archives locally. The archive represents the ongoing resistance against state surveillance\, and aims to contribute to the building of community power towards abolition. \n\n\n\nFor more context about this project\, we recommend a 30-minute documentary created by organizers\, or you can read more about the project at https://www.eyebeam.org/residents/stop-lapd-spying-coalition/. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDillon Sung\n\n\n\nDillon Sung is a multimedia artist and community organizer based in Southern California. Dillon’s research as a Ph.D. student and Provost Fellow of American Studies & Ethnicity at USC is on the question of migrant self-determination and the conditions of possibility for full participation for stateless peoples—considering the historical function of Korean statelessness in particular. Her interdisciplinary work analyzes how affective practices—such as grief\, missing\, wanting of possibility—can generate resistive subject formations for the speculative potential of stateless socialities in imperiling the notion(s) of citizenship\, settler colonialism\, and nation-statehood. She also informs and engages her research with an art practice through discourses of fine art—namely social practice—and performance studies. She is a 2019 – 2021 Imagining America PAGE Co-Director and the lead artist in developing the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition Archive as a 2020 – 2021 Rapid Response for a Better Digital Future Fellow at Eyebeam. \n\n\n\n\n\nHamid Khan\n\n\n\nHamid Khan is an organizer and coordinator with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition. The mission of the coalition is to build community-based power to dismantle police surveillance\, spying\, and infiltration programs. The coalition utilizes multiple campaigns to advance an innovative organizing model that is Los Angeles-based but has implications regionally\, nationally\, and internationally. As founder and former Executive Director of South Asian Network (1990-2010)\, Hamid helped create the first grass roots community-based organization in Los Angeles committed to informing and empowering thousands of South Asians in Southern California to act as agents of change in eliminating biases\, discrimination and injustices. Hamid also serves on the board of May First Technology\, a membership organization that engages in building movements by advancing the strategic use and collective control of technology for local struggles\, global transformation\, and emancipation without borders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions to Consider\n\n\n\nHow did consulting with archivists and other information professionals change the project? Was there tension between “professional” archival concepts or conventions and the goals of the project? The archive is being shaped by the audiences that will use it. Who are the audiences you envisioned at the beginning and has this changed as you speak with more people about this work?Have any expressed community needs seemed in conflict with each other or the project goals and scope?  If so\, how those have been resolved. What are the implications of making a born digital archive physical? Are there other archives that you modeled this idea after? Some interviewees in the documentary talked about abolition\, and at least one hoped this archive would lead to that.  Can you talk more about the idea of abolition\, and if there are any next steps for the archive after it’s live that relate to abolition?
